so you wanna start a blog, eh?
wellā¦iāve been blogging for four years now. and although i would not consider myself an expert by any stretch, iāve learned a thing or twelve about putting oneself out here on the interwebs for all the world to see.Ā so i thought i might share some of my best blogging advice.
before i get started though, i want to say this.Ā i am a not-for-profit blogger.Ā ok sure iāve got a blogher ad running over there on the right hand sideā¦but with the money iāve made from that, i might be able to treat us to a couple of grande mocha frappucinos.Ā so if youāre here reading this blog post looking for tips on how to quit your day job to stay home and blog.Ā or looking for tips on SEO and marketing/branding.Ā or how to create viral content thatās going to get pinned zillion times on pinterest or wind up in somebodyās facebook feedā¦.well this post wonāt be of much use to you.Ā sorry.
but, if what you want from blogging is a gratifying experience.Ā a place to express yourself.Ā a place to share your pictures and story.Ā a connection to other like-minded bloggersā¦ well then i have a few thoughts that might help you on that journey.Ā so letās get started shall we?
1) write the blog that you want to read.Ā i canāt stress this enough.Ā you have to write for yourself.Ā i sort of think of this space as, in the words of jean fleming in pursue the intentional life, my āold woman fileāā¦. a collection of thoughts and stories that help me to make sense of my life.Ā honestly, i could never have imagined how incredibly cathartic it would become to express myself in this way.
2) donāt worry about what others think.Ā this is sort of a complement to #1.Ā but hereās the thing, some people are going to get what you have to say and some arenāt.Ā if you are writing from the heart as authentically as possible, thatās all that matters.Ā oh believe me, it totally sucks when share something that is really personal and all the sudden you lose five blog subscribers at once.Ā yeahā¦that happened to me.Ā and it made me question everything about why i started a blog in the first place.Ā but what it comes back to is a place for me to share my thoughts and my stories.Ā soā¦my advice to you is, in the words of the indomitable taylor swift, shake it off.
#bloggersgonnablog #ohyeahiwentthereĀ #mydaughteriscringingrightnow
3) donāt be afraid to blog about the weather.Ā so if youāre just getting started on your blog, you might be thinking to yourself, āwhat in the world am i going to blog about?āĀ and i totally get it.Ā four years of blog posts laterā¦and iāve blogged about everything from clean sheets to the meaning of life.Ā and itās all good.Ā because once you have a certain amount of content under your belt youāll start to make connections about your life.Ā youāll start to understand yourself better.Ā and the best partā¦ youāll see the magic in your most ordinary days.
4) buy a notebook.Ā hereās the deal, once you open yourself to this kind of expression, get ready.Ā because before you know it, your creative mojo is going to start bubbling up.Ā youāll be sitting at your desk at your āreal jobā and all the sudden youāre going to have a great idea for a blog post about blog advice. or youāll go for a run and come back with a million ideas for your blog.Ā so keep your notebook close by for those occasions.Ā trust me on this.
5) give yourself room to grow.Ā like i said before, in the past four years iāve blogged about a lot of different things.Ā but that being said, there are also many themes that recur in my own life.Ā sort of like the seasons, a cyclical nature to things.Ā and whatās interesting is that even though summer still looks like summer, the thing that changes is me. each year as iāve grown and evolved, my writing has grown and evolved, and perhaps more importantly, the way i see things has grown and evolved.Ā seeing the same old life through new eyes has profoundly changed me and i have blogging to thank for that.
6) there is nothing new under the sun.Ā itās true, there is probably nothing you have to say that hasnāt already been said before.Ā but it doesnāt matterā¦you need to say it anyway.Ā i will tell you that this concept, while on the outside it might seem a bit defeating, itās actually so liberating.Ā it takes all the pressure off trying to be original which was something that i really worried about in the beginningā¦ how to tell my story in a new way.Ā Ā but then i discovered this quote by c.s. lewis:
even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.
see?Ā completely liberating!Ā so just tell your storyā¦be honest, be ethical.Ā but tell your story because the world needs it.
7) play nice.Ā so my guess is that if you have the desire to start a blog, youāre probably also a fan of reading blogs.Ā and as austin kleon suggests in his book steal like an artist, as bloggers (artists), we gather inspiration from a variety of sourcesā¦including each other.Ā but i would also like to offer this ā if you happen to come across a particular blog post that really speaks to you.Ā that really touches your heart in some way.Ā that inspires you to write something of your ownā¦ i think itās always a nice gesture to give a little nod to that original post in your own post (or even better, leave that person a little blog love).Ā because as bloggers, weāre all just out here to trying make sense of our lives.Ā share our art.Ā spread some light.Ā and to know that something we wrote connected with someone elseā¦well thatās an awesome feeling.
8) embrace imperfection. as bloggers we have to be careful.Ā because if the only thing we ever blog about is all the good stuff, the pretty stuff, then it can sometimes appear from outside that we lead these beautiful, perfect lives.Ā a life where everyone is happy and all our clothes are folded and neatly put away and our litter box empties itself.Ā which is not at all how my life is anyway.Ā so donāt be afraid to share your struggles (to the degree you feel comfortable)ā¦because so often, thatās where grace lives.
9) blogging is not dead.Ā i read an article recently that said something along the lines of how instagram was chipping away at the traditional blog platforms (blogger, wordpress, typepad).Ā and to some degree i get it. i share a good bit of my life on instagram.Ā but i am going to say it again and declare right now that blogging is not dead.
there is no way that i could have put this all into an instagram post.Ā there are things in life that need more than a snapshot and a quip.Ā so if you feel compelled to blog about your life and your catās hairballs, and the changing of the leaves in the fallā¦ then do that.Ā please.Ā tell the world about the time you discovered the light.Ā then share it.Ā because we need it.Ā the world needs your light.
10) say thank youā¦often.Ā once youāve started blogging, it probably wonāt be too long until people (other than your mom and your best friend) stumble across it.Ā and pretty soon, to your amazement, youāll make friends and have a following of people who get you and what you have to say.Ā and these lovely souls will not only get it, but sometimes they will leave you the kindest comments.Ā just reach out to you and tell you that youāre doing a good job.Ā or share with you that something you said made them see something in their own life.Ā or that your words helped then in some way.Ā this is the most wonderful feeling.Ā but itās also incredibly humbling.Ā so neverā¦.never ever ever ever forget their kindness.Ā and never, ever forget to say thank you.
so there you haveā¦my ten best pieces of advice for new bloggers.Ā and now iām going to turn the comments over to my incredibly talented and generous blogging friends and let them share their blogging advice in the comments.
and one final note.Ā thank you.Ā thank you for reading my blog.Ā that you for getting me.Ā you have profoundly touched my life and my heart.
love, kelly
such a timely post for me right now Kelly as I am thinking about my blog and just where i want to go with it. thanks you for the great advice.
thank you cathy for sharing yourself and being such an inspiration to me. xo
Great thoughts and insights, Kelly, and I’m so glad you shared them. I read somewhere that it takes a blogger about three years to find his/her voice. I think about this a lot as FOL comes up to it’s third anniversary. And I can see it happening. I can also see in happening to me on Camper. I agree … blogging is not dead. xo
i totally agree with the three years thing!
Wow, what a great insightful full of info and advise blog post!! I love it! And I always love your honest is best way of blogging!! True You!!
thank you my friend!
I love your blog. I’m not sure it if will allow my comment, so much trouble with technology, but I just wanted to let you know that I really look forward to reading your blog posts, and seeing your lovely photos. I’m also known as Dianaanne in classes and on flicker.
oh my goodness diane. thank you so much. i love that i’ve made so many friends through flickr.
Great tips!!!! š
thanks my friend!
I have a written journal. I would publish it except that I don’t know how to and really don’t want to spend my extra time doing it (no offense- spend your extra time ANY way you like). You lost bloggers after one post? Fair weather fans. Reading only pieces that one agrees with won’t allow one to open their mind to learn. Who honestly thinks that they are right about everything? Ridiculous! If someone respects you, they will read your blog and think about it, whether they agree with it or not. š
so true rose!
Such fantastic advice, Kelly… and your blog is amazing … truly …
thank you so much barb!
Well, Kelly, this should be published in “Artful Blogging” magazine!! You have some great advice for new and old bloggers! You know I love to stop by here and see bits and pieces of your life! You are a ray of sunshine in your words and your images!!
well cathy now you’ve gone and made me cry. š thank you so much for your kind words. you are one of my very first (and very dear) blog friends. i love that we’ve been on this journey together. xo
Some great advice for bloggers — especially the bit about writing the blog you want to read. Thanks for putting it all down into 10 points. Indeed : Blogging is NOT dead! I’m so tired of people saying that. Twitter and IG is just shorthand designed for iPhones. It’s not a format conducive to what we do on our blogs with longer and deeper thoughts and ideas. I’ve been blogging for 9 years now, and I can trace the shifts in my creativity through the blog. I am grateful for the written record through the years. That’s my portfolio. Enjoy the rest of your summer, Deborah!
Every month, I do a google image search for desktop calendars, as I like to change my background up every month to something new and inspiring. As it happens, I picked your calendar images both this month AND last, so I took it as a sign to read farther into your website, and I’m happy I did! I’ll be adding you to my feedly….and I agree. Blogs are not dead – you just have to look a little to find the ones that speak to you sometimes. š
wow…how nice of you to stop by with such a lovely comment! thank you so much for your kind words. glad to know there are other bloggers out there hanging in there.
