Mountains and Molehills

In addition to being a self-proclaimed mess-maker extraordinaire, I also possess a number of other invaluable talents such as:
  1. Biting off more than I can chew
  2. Sweating the small stuff
  3. Reinventing the wheel
  4. Straining over gnats and swallowing camels
  5. Making things harder than they need to be
  6. Making mountains out of molehills

This last one I have been practicing quite a bit lately.

This week, yet another article regarding Pinterest and potential copyright violations has surfaced. In her article, Kirsten, a professional photographer/attorney, explains how Pinterest has basically washed its hands of any liability and puts the onus on users to make sure that we have either the right or permission to Pin an image onto one of our Pinboards. And for that reason, Kirsten deleted all of her Pinboards and Pinterest account.

Yikes!

I can honestly say that I have tried to “Link with Love” and only Pin images that preserve the link to the original owner. Plus I’ve even gone through my Pinboards and looked for “bad” Pins. But asking for permission??

Ugh.

Like I’ve said at least 147 times, I love Pinterest. Or I guess I should say, I love what Pinterest says it wants to be – a place to “organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web.”

{As a completely random aside, right now all I can think of is Dorothy in Jerry Maguire, “I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is.”} Smile

Anyway, just like my girlfriends (and 99.5% of other users I would imagine) Pinterest has been such a fun way to try new things. PLUS in the process I discovered so many new sites and fun stuff that I didn’t even know existed! Loads of inspiration at my fingertips! But good grief – I don’t want to get sued over it!

I’m not saying that I’m ready to take down my Pinterest boards just yet, but I am considering what this means for my 52 Weeks of Pinspirationproject. It’s one thing for me personally to Pin things that I find interesting (which as of right now is not illegal…I think), but considering all this rumbling about copyright violations, I’m worried it might be a little imprudent to scream it from the rooftops here on my blog. So I am taking this week off to think about it.

Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? Probably, but better safe than sorry.

Peace, Kelly

My friend and I have been discussing this as well. Given the ease with which you can pin and I do love pinterest myself I also have no desire to be sued (and who knows if anyone would actually do it but who wants to be the ‘one’ to be the first to have it happen to them). I will be interested in what you decide to do.

I am having a really hard time with this cause if it is out on the web for all to see and try…..why can we not try it and talk about it!!! There are always those that will FIND something to bitch about! Usually that means that they are very bitter and jealous of your talent. I myself have had people challenge me because of jealousy. I support you in whatever you decide and would love to see you continue to try new things and write about them in your own amazing words! That IS a wonderful talent that you possess among many others!! 🙂 Love you honey and know that we are ALL behind you!
