It’s not unusual for us to find bird nests around yard (or even on my front door wreath) this time of year. It’s also not unusual to see bunnies in the yard, especially in the early mornings and evenings.

However, what is unusual is finding a bunny nest in the backyard.

I guess technically speaking, I didn’t find it first – Poppy did. Last week she had been acting strange and hanging out near a flowerbed in the backyard.

And then one evening I was walking out back toward the grill and spied a momma bunny with a bunch of grass in her mouth.

As a rule, the bunnies in our yard don’t seem too bothered by our presence, so I was able to follow her with my camera to where she was building her nest underneath a crape myrtle.

Clearly I wasn’t the only one interested in this momma bunny’s nest building activities.

A little later that evening, I watched her as she made several trips back and forth to her nest, crawling under the wood gate between our front and back yard. Please note her little nose and adorable little front feet.

I also found an old wire flower basket in the garage to place over the nest to keep Poppy away from the babies.

As much as I bemoan the voracious habits of bunnies in the garden, I could never bring myself to hurt one of these adorable creatures. And I suppose a part of me loves knowing that my yard feels like a safe place for her to raise her babies.

I haven’t seen momma in the nest much, but the internet told me that they often hide elsewhere during the day so as to not draw predators to the nest. So for now I’m just trying to give her space and not stress her out.
In a few weeks the baby bunnies (called kittens – how cute is that!) will probably start to leave the nest at which point I’ll have to get creative to keep Poppy away from them. That should be fun <<insert sarcasm here>>, so I’ll keep you posted.
Love, Kelly
