Atonement

Kelsey has been involved in music and theater since Kindergarten.  And of course, as you might imagine, I’ve documented all of it in my scrapbooks.

Here’s the page from her 1st grade musical.  I would like to point out that this would have been in my serious Creative Memories days (notice all the stickers).

The next photo was from her 2nd grade Christmas musical.  You can see I’ve really started branching out with my scrapbook page embellishments.

Here is Kelsey is her 4th grade musical and play.  Can you say eyelets and vellum?  I love seeing how my pages evolved over time.

At any rate, I guess all my daughter’s performing makes me a stage mom.  Which I love.

Now, just so we’re clear – I’m not that obnoxious mom standing in the audience coaching her daughter’s every hoochie-momma dance move a la Toddlers and Tiaras.

No, this stage mom prefers to be behind the scenes.  And I’ve worked on just about every aspect of a musical production from costumes to sets.  It’s a lot of fun.

This week, however, has been a bit unusual.

Kelsey’s school is performing Les Miserables this year and it’s a HUGE production!  Even with the full-time costume and set designers who have been working nonstop, it takes a lot of volunteers to get the show to the stage.  I have been working backstage with the costume designer and done many things for the first time this week such as:

  • sewing a feather boa to the bottom of a dress
  • making a black sharpie marker “tattoo” on a grown boy’s arm (A new career change perhaps?  I’d be so legit as a tattoo artist driving around in my Volvo listening to country music.)
  • helping grown boys to button and unbutton their shirts, pants, and vests for quick changes
  • tying sashes around grown boys’ waists

and last but certainly not least!

  • volunteering to wash, dry, and iron grown boys’ white costume shirts

That alone should atone for not letting my daughter watch Cartoon Network as a child.  Not letting her have frosted pop tarts…well, I’ll probably be paying for that for the rest of my life.

Peace, Yours truly

aka  Mother of the year.
