Friends I’d Pick All Over Again

This past weekend I attended my 25th high school reunion.  In the week leading up to it, my thoughts alternated between:
  • I am now at the age when I thought my parents were old
  • I wish I weighed about 10 pounds less
  • Hopefully no one will notice the big zit on my cheek

Friday night I met up with my BFF from high school, Kristi, and we drove over to the football game.

Really…if Kristi doesn’t start aging soon, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep her as a friend.  Her (still) beautiful smile and amazing skin are getting a little hard for my delicate self-esteem to take.

{I’m just teasing…mostly}  **wink**

Anyway, I don’t know why I was so nervous walking up to the stadium – maybe it’s because I didn’t go to the 20 year reunion (or maybe it was my zit) – because once I got there and saw so many familiar faces, I felt completely at ease.   A few of my friends I hadn’t seen since we graduated, but after a few hugs and it’s-so-wonderful-to-see-you’s, we all just sorta picked up where we left off.

As we sat in the endzone watching the football game, it felt like I was transported 25 years backwards when we sat together in band jamming to the drum cadences and playing our school fight song.  And as the game went on, it got a little chilly, so we all sat huddled together under a blanket.  I swear it was just like old-times.

Saturday night we all met up again at the reunion party.  During the course of the evening we took time to honor our classmates who had served or were still serving in the Armed Forces.  We also paid tribute to our deceased classmates (a not so subtle reminder to me how precious and fragile life really is).  We watched a slide show with pictures from back in the day and more recent family photos.  Then I realized just how proud I felt to be included in this amazing group of men and women.

These smart, funny, talented, and courageous men and women are woven into the fabric of my life.

And even if I hadn’t known them for over 25 years, I’d still pick them as friends all over again.

Peace, Kelly
