Gardening, Twitter, and Instagram–Teaching an old dog new tricks

Happy Easter Monday friends.  I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend and got to spend it with your loved ones.  What started out as a rainy, dreary Saturday in my neck of the woods turned out to be quite lovely on Easter morning.

We had a very nice weekend and got to spend some time with both my parents and Tripp’s mom.  Plus our delightful daughter was home for the long-weekend – indeed a sight for sore eyes.

In addition to some cooking and cleaning, I also did some “housekeeping” in my vegetable garden.  Specifically, thinning.

When I planted my lettuces, beets, and carrots (oh my!), I followed the directions on the package which said to plant seeds densely in shallow rows.  For the past several weeks I have been thrilled to watch my teeny seeds sprout and grow.  But the seed packets clearly state that when seedlings reach about one inch high they should thinned to a spacing of three to four inches between plants.  As you can tell, I’ve been putting off this task!  

For some reason, thinning seedlings just goes against everything in me as a gardener.  Do you guys feel that way?? I mean, I always thought gardening was about getting things to grow. LOL  Taking out perfectly fine seedlings just seems so harsh.   But I know it’s absolutely essential.  Closely spaced plants will compete for vital water and nutrients in the soil.  Plus plants that are too close together are more susceptible to diseases.  The end result will be a bunch of puny plants with little or no yield.

This is concept of giving things room to grow seems to be a bit of a theme in my life right now.  So I took some good advice from the Master Gardener and, with hopes of a good harvest, I thinned my seedlings to the (nearly) appropriate spacing.

Sometimes it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. 

What’s cool is that with the baby lettuces I pulled out, I made Tripp and me a little salad of baby lettuces for dinner tonight. How awesome is that!!

…how do you like my little Instagram photo?  I’ve had the app on my phone forever, but just recently started using it more.

It’s such a fun and easy way to capture the ordinary, yet wonderful, stuff of life.  And yes I am just as addicted to taking photos of flowers with my phone as I am with my regular camera.  LOL  I even found a widget for displaying my Instagram photos in the sidebar of my blog. 

In addition to practicing with Instagram, I also got a lesson in Twitter from my delightful daughter.  She explained the difference between a reply and retweet and in addition, she helped me compose a tweet complete with a photo and #hashtag to The Chew.  And they retweeted me!

My life is now complete.

Anyway, that’s all for now.  I already pushed the restart on my dryer three times –hardly a record–and unless I want to rewash Tripp’s shirts – would not be the first time – I better go hang them up.
