Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt

Except for chocolate, no other dessert or treat is more universally adored in my household than ice cream.  Ice cream is our ultimate comfort food.

The only problem is that ice cream is not the healthiest treat option one can turn to in order to satisfy the craving for something creamy and sweet.  Plus, since I’ve been working my arse off in exercise bootcamp (figuratively and hopefully literally), it would be nice to enjoy a frozen dessert that didn’t undo everything that my poor weenie arms have been working so hard for.

Homemade frozen yogurt is my attempt to kill two birds with one stone – a creamy yet not completely off the chart unhealthy dessert.  And it’s SUPER simple – so make that three birds with one stone.

Here’s all you need:

  • 24 oz container of Greek yogurt*
  • 3/4 C sugar
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 C cream
  • 1 C chocolate chips

002

*Greek yogurt is preferable because of it’s thick and creamy texture.  You can make your own Greek style yogurt by straining regular yogurt it in a mesh strainer lined with paper towel overnight in the fridge.

This might possibly be the easiest homemade ice cream ever.  Just mix all of the ingredients until well blended.   Poor the contents into your prepared (base is well frozen) ice cream freezer.  I have one of these countertop Krups numbers and it works great for small batches.  But you could do this in one of those old-school ice cream freezers with the ice and rock salt business too.

003

Whatever you do, do not leave the 1/2 bag of chocolate chips laying on the counter – they are addictive!

This recipe starts out pretty thick because of the yogurt.  And it took about 40 minutes or so for it to freeze (the paddle will stop when it’s ready).

Hello beautiful!

You could serve and eat the frozen yogurt right now and it’s semi-solid stage like this.  But I prefer to let it harden a bit in the freezer and scoop it out (my first job was at Braum’s after all).  So if you can find a plastic container with it’s matching lid in your messy cupboard that would be perfect.  Otherwise, ahem, just cover it with plastic and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

And be sure to lick the spatula.

After a couple of hours it should be firm enough to scoop.

This frozen yogurt is so delicious.  It’s not too sweet and has a nice yogurty tang.  And I have to say the chocolate chips are the perfect compliment – just that little bit of crunch and richness without making it too sweet.  Me likey!!

I hope you likey!!

Peace, Kelly
