Maybe I’ll put that one on a two year plan.
Anyway, I’ve been planning our turkey day menu which has taken me all of about two minutes because at our house Thanksgiving dinner is pretty much the same thing every year and that’s how we like it. (run-on sentence much??) No fancy turkey preparations (although I have brined turkeys a time or four), no funky sides, and no weird vegetables (my roasted brussel sprouts were not appreciated last year at all).
So here’s our typical menu:
- Roasted Turkey – I’m on the fence about whether to brine this year. I think it makes difference, but I’m not sure if it’s enough to make all the work worth it.
- Cornbread dressing – And I mean dressing not stuffing.
- Mashed Potatoes – As far as I’m concerned there is no Thanksgiving dinner without mashed potatoes. I mean how else are you supposed to eat gravy?
- Gravy – enough said.
- Sweet Potatoes – A love/hate veg at our house…Kelsey and I love them, Tripp hates them.
- Green Bean Casserole – A family staple and a tasty vehicle for those fried onion things. And the one and only time of year that I used canned cream soups.
- Cranberry Sauce – I hated the canned stuff as a kid, but since I started making it from scratch I have a whole new appreciation for those tart little berries. And besides, what else would you put on your turkey sandwich the next day??
- Salad – I usually do some kind of festive fall salad with either pears or apples. I like to know that there is at least one crunchy thing on my plate. Makes me feel better about all the gravy I pour over everything.
- Rolls – Gravy-soppers extraordinaire!
- Pumpkin Pie – My mother-in-law is always in charge of Pumpkin Pie. It’s never been one of my favorites, but she and Tripp love it.
The only thing I might do differently this year is make rolls from scratch. And maybe another dessert in addition to Pi’s pie. I happen to love pecan pie but no one else in my family does and I cannot be trusted with a WHOLE pie.
So, I guess the next thing I’ll do is make a grocery list. Something I avoid about as much as vacuuming my floors.
Wait…maybe that’s what my New Year’s Resolution should be next year!
Peace, Kelly
Sounds like a very similar menu to mine. I would love to “share” your pecan pie, yummy! And you are right, how could the end of the year be speeding toward us already! I don’t even remember my New Year’s resolution, haha!
well, i don’t have a go-to recipe for pecan pie. i haven’t made it in years, but i think the last time i used a recipe from southern living. it was delicious though! 🙂
