iām trying to remember what exactly it was that possessed me to actually go out on the internet and buy calligraphy supplies.
generally speaking, i think it started out with my genuine interest in typography and fonts.Ā and at the beginning of the year, i was looking for a way to insert my own, personal, creative touch to my project life albums by making little scripture cards to fit inside the 3Ć4 pockets.Ā
well so thanks to photography, i have amassed quite the little collection of fonts.Ā but none of them were ājust right.āĀ
pleaseā¦ i knowā¦ donāt say it.
i didnāt want a fussy calligraphy font.Ā i wanted something more natural and free-flowing.Ā similar to my handwriting.Ā Ā so i looked into wacom tablets.Ā but those were a bit on the pricey side and i couldnāt justify spending the money on it.Ā Ā
actually, now that iām really thinking about it, i think it might have been pinterest.Ā
once again ā¦.i knowā¦ donāt say it.
yes.Ā thatās it.Ā i was searching for free calligraphy fonts when i fell down the rabbit hole and stumbled across a pin for molly jacquesā modern calligraphy class at skillshare.com.Ā which then prompted me to do a pinterest search for modern calligraphy.Ā and that my friends was all she wrote.
so here we are two months later.Ā and i love it.Ā i had no idea how much i would love it, but i do.Ā
but it is hardā¦i have a long way to go.Ā sometimes my calligraphy still looks like an 87 year-old woman whoās had 12 cups of espresso has been writing it.Ā definitely putting calligraphy into the ālooks easier than it actually isā category.Ā
asĀ i was brainstorming what to photograph for this monthās installment of my 12 on 12 photography project, i was thinking about nicely photography and calligraphy play together.
and yes, i am publicly owning up to the fact that i had to buy drug store readers for practicing my calligraphy.
anyway, just like with photography, to be any good at calligraphy you have to practice.Ā alot.Ā there will lots of mistakesā¦you have to be ready for the ink blobs and spatters.Ā
not terribly dissimilar to an underexposed shot or fuzzy focus.ā¦.just part of the learning process.Ā
as was the case with the previous two months, this film project makes me realize what a lazy photographer iāve become.Ā so itās been good to sort of get back to basics.Ā and the other good news is that i finally figured out how to use the exposure/focus lock on the back of the camera (if all else fails, read the instructions right??).Ā
iām so glad that i listened to my heart and decided to try calligraphy.Ā
itās added a new dimension to my photography and my project life album that i just love.
thanks for letting me share it with you.
love, kelly
I’m glad too! You may not think so, but I think your calligraphy is lovely. I’ll be sending you important invitation envelopes someday so you can address them. š
I think you’re doing a fantastic job. And, honestly, Kelly … when Kelsey gets married, you’ll be so glad you know how to do this. My daughter and I kind of took a cram practice approach to it. It served our purpose and Krista is still pretty good at it. I let it drop. But I can imagine this is a very relaxing activity for you and that’s always a good thing. xoxo
Your interest has taken you on a whole new journey! I’m enjoying watching you practice and include photos – love all of these! Several years ago I bought a calligraphy pen set, and tried it out, but was too busy working to do anything with it. You have challenged me to get it out and try again, just for fun. You have a lovely “hand”. Enjoy your new hobby!
I think you’re doing beautifully! Always fun to learn something new. And unfortunately, I am depending more and more on my drugstore readers š
Gosh I’m not usually here but your calligraphy drew me in. So gorgeous. I try to let my heart lead me too.
This is one of these things I used to do. I learned so I could address our wedding invitations, years ago. I loved it, and you are much better than I every was. I have not done it in years and years. Beautiful post Kelly.
Kelly, your calligraphy is beautiful! I don’t think I’ve have the patience to do all the practice that’s necessary! That was my problem with piano. I loved and still love to play, but I did not like the practice exercises! Great 12 shots!
oh, look at you! challenges are wonderful things, aren’t they?
