for when you forget to turn off your sprinkler

i could be a total hermit in the winter…i just really don’t like cold weather.

one of the things that i have really held onto from last year is the idea of getting out more.  now to some that might mean planning more vacations or trips away from home. but for me, in the winter, it literally means – get out of the house more.

so one of things i have been doing this winter is forcing myself to walk outside when it’s really cold outside.  no, especially when it’s really cold outside.

so this past tuesday i bundled up in my coat and hat.  then i grabbed the dogs {because they get cabin fever something fierce} and headed for a short stroll around the neighborhood.

it was a sunny day so i walked in the general vicinity of where the sun was shining.  lots of beautiful blue sky that day that made me really happy.

and of course the wonderfully prolific holly bushes which are always so delightful.

i walked sort of around the back side of neighborhood and went the back way through maple park.  the light was so pretty….

the golden hour never fails to inspire.

anyway on our way back towards the house, i spotted something unusual in distance.  a giant patch of white on one of my neighbors’ front lawn.

as i got up closer i could tell that it was ice.  their entire front yard was COVERED in ice,   probably from having their sprinkler system running.

well so as i walked along i kind of chuckled to myself.  not really laughing at them.  because although this exact thing hasn’t happened to me personally, it’s kind of one of those ‘oh shit’ moments.  which actually do happen to me on a somewhat regular basis.

anyway, after i passed by the front of their house, i saw something kind of shimmery out of the corner of my eye.  and when i turned the corner to look, i saw all these amazing icicles.  and the way the late day sun was shining on them…well it was magical.  like strings of diamonds dripping from the tree branches.

isn’t that the neatest thing??

i was thinking about this on the way home.  how we all have these ‘oh shit’ moments.  in this case there didn’t seem to be any significant damage and was mostly just an embarrassing pain in the ass.  but even still…if you look at it just right… at the right time and in the right light…  it’s magic.

wonder and magic from accidents and ‘oh shit’ moments.

this is why i am getting out more….to see with new eyes.  to see things differently.

be thou my vision, o Lord of my heart

it makes all the difference.

love, kelly

Yes, wintertime hermit. That’s me. And you, my friend, are much braver than I! I’ve been cooped up in the house with my 6-year old granddaughter {snow days} all week, except for the twice daily trek to the mailbox for papers and mail. Your photos are beautiful, you almost … note: almost … tempt me to take my camera for walk. There’s only one problem: she doesn’t like cold weather either.

I am like you, I try every single day to GET OUT, as it drives me nuts to be in the house all of the time. I was out today, and saw a yard just like this, and the sprinkler was still running. What a mess. You definitely got some great photos though!
